The Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Band Program is committed to fostering the musical development of each individual student and promoting a lifelong appreciation for the arts. With students participating in various ensembles, including concert bands, marching band, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, pep band, and fall and winter color guard, students have ample opportunities to grow as musicians.
Students can also participate in additional individual and ensemble performances, such as the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, Central Kentucky Jazz Orchestra, KMEA District Honor Bands, KMEA Solo and Ensemble, KMEA All State Band, and university-sponsored clinics.
With a proud tradition of excellence, the Dunbar Marching Band is a two-time winner of the prestigious Sudler Shield and has been a consistent KMEA State Finalist and seven-time State Champion since 1991. Additionally, the band has been a Bands of America Regional Champion multiple times and has had the honor of performing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2007 and 2014.
